ODYSSEY – BIOGRAFIA

 ODYSSEY es una banda de metal progresivo formada en el año 1980 en Santander (España) por miembros de tres grupos de la escena metálica cantabra: Andrés Cagigas - Guitarra (Watios de Acero),Taru - Bajo (Bunker),Phil Grijuela - Voz (Fallen Angel). Eduardo – Teclados y Jose “Cuervo” – Batería completaron esta primera alineación que grabó su primer LP, “IN SPACE AND TIME” en 1990 con el sello “Gran Sol”.

 Aquellos eran los años de los orígines del Metal Progresivo en USA y la música de la banda no podía ser facilmente clasificada en los estilos españoles del momento. Odyssey fue descrita como una banda de metal sinfónico y el album tuvo poca repercusión en el panorama metálico español, debido a la practicamente inexistente distribución del disco. Sin embargo, podemos decir que fueron pioneros en España de lo que hoy es comunmente conocido como “metal progresivo”.

 Después de aquel primer disco, la banda comenzó la pre-producción de “ABYSS”, su previsto siguiente album, pero un amplio abanico de complicaciones, con varios miembros abandonando la banda (Phil, Eduardo y “Cuervo”) acabaron con el proyecto antes de tiempo. Aquella fue la época en que José Luis Missiego “Drusso” se unió a la banda como batería, permaneciendo hasta la época actual.

 A lo largo de más de 15 años, una gran cantidad y variedad de músicos han pasado por el grupo, pero sin un objetivo claro o una verdadera continuidad del proyecto. Finalmente, en el año 2005, la banda (Andrés – Guitarra, Drusso – Batería, Miguelín – Bajo) deciden grabar la música que habían estado tocando y componiendo a lo largo de todos esos años. En aquel momento, Javi se unió a la banda como vocalista, pero después de 2 años de preproducción y de muchos problemas deciden que no es la persona adecuada para la grabación de lo que será RESURRECTION y el sonido de la banda y es invitado a abandonar el grupo

 En busca de un nuevo cantante contactan con Iván Valle, cantante de la banda de Rock SOULBANE, y por primera vez en muchos años, la banda encuentra su VOZ, el cantante perfecto para la música de Odyssey. Iván trabajó durante unos meses en nuevas melodías para el album y en la elaboración y estructura de las letras, dando una evolución lógica a “RESURRECTION”, una historia conceptual basada en una idea original del batería Jose Luis Missiego “Drusso”.

 El cambio de bajista fue otro gran problema durante la grabación, pero fue finalmente solucionado con la vuelta al grupo de Marcos Garrote “Blackie”, que había sido guitarrista de la banda hacía 15 años, aportando su personal y genial estilo a la sección rítmica.

 Con la formación definitiva perfectamente definida, finalizan las sesiones de grabación y finalmente publican  “RESURRECTION”, su segundo album, una historia conceptual acerca del viaje a través de la muerte y la resurrección de su protagonista, creando diferentes ambientes, ideas y reflexiones acerca de lo humano y lo divino.

 Con el comienzo del año 2010, la banda comienza a trabajar en la inminente presentación en directo de  “RESURRECTION”.

 ODYSSEY are a progressive metal band formed in the year 1989 in Santander (Spain) by members of 3 bands of Cantabrian Metal Scene: Andrés Cagigas – Guitar (Watios de Acero), Taru – Bass (Bunker), Phil Grijuela – Voice (Fallen Angel). Eduardo – Keyboard and José “Cuervo” – Drums completed this first line-up that recorded their first LP, “IN SPACE AND TIME” in 1990 with “Gran Sol” label.

 Those were the years of the Progressive Metal origins in the USA, and the band´s music could not be easily classified in any of the spanish styles of that time. Odyssey was described as a “symphonic metal” band and the album had little repercusion in the spanish metal scene, due to the nearly nonexistent album distribution, but we can say that they were pioneers in Spain of what today is commonly known as “Progressive Metal”.

 After that first album, the band started the pre-production of “ABYSS”, their projected next album, but a very wide range of complications, with various members of the band departing (Phil, Eduardo and “Cuervo”), finished off the project ahead of time. That was the time when José Luis Missiego “Drusso” joined the band as drummer until the present age.

 During more than 15 years, a large quantity and variety of musicians have passed through the band, but without a clear objective or a true continuity of the project. Finally, in the year 2005, the band (Andrés – Guitar, Drusso – Drums, Miguelín – Bass) decide to record the music they had been playing and composing during all those years. At that time, Javi joins the band as vocalist, but after 2 years of pre-production and a lot of problems, the rest of the band decide that he´s not the suitable singer for the sound of the band and ask him to leave the project.

 In search for a new vocalist, they contacted with Iván Valle, singer of the Rock band SOULBANE, and for the first time in many years the band find their voice, the perfect singer for Odyssey´s music. Iván worked for a few months in the new melodies for the album and the lyrics structure and writing, giving a logical evolution to “Resurrection”, a conceptual story based on the original idea of Jose Luis Missiego “Drusso”,

The bassman change was another big problem during the recording sessions, but it was finally solved with the return of Marcos Garrote “Blackie” to the band (he was the guitarist of the band 15 years ago) contributing with his personal and great style to the rhythm section.

 With the definitive line-up clearly defined, they finish the recording sessions and finally publish “RESURRECTION” their second album, a conceptual story of travel through the death and resurrection of the protagonist of the story, creating different landscapes, ideas and thoughts of the human and divine.

 With the beginning of the year 2010, the band start to work in the inminent presentation of “RESURRECTION” and the upcoming live shows.

 ODYSSEY
